Pre-internship advice seminar
The Pre-Internship Advice Seminar is aimed at final year medical students to give an overall picture of things that need to be considered as you enter the working profession. A number of companies attend to give out advise and tips on topics such as financial planning, superannuation, tax and health insurance. This is a seminar not to be missed to ensure you make the most out of being an intern, maximise your income, plan for the future and organise all those extra little things you never thought of as you scabbed off your parents!
Date: Sunday 2nd August
Time: 10am-3.30pm
Venue: “The Spot” Basement Theatre, New Economics and Commerce Building, 198 Berkeley St, The University of Melbourne (The building that looks like a cow near the law building!)
Morning tea, lunch and afternoon team provided.
REGISTRATION ESSENTIAL – registration is available here.
A taste of what we have lined up so far…
Grimsey: Grimsey will speak about financial planning and investing. They will give tips about where your money is best spent for future gains.
Avant: We have all subscribed to Medical Defence Organisations through our medical school years and hopefully haven’t had to use it. Medical Defence Insurance is important as a junior doctor as you are not always covered by the hospital. Avant will explain where some junior doctors get into strife and what you need out of your MDO Insurance.
Bongiorno Financial Planners: Has someone been telling you to collect all your dining and entertainment receipts to save tax for next year? Salary packaging is a unique tax opportunity for public hospital employees and you can potentially save thousands in tax next year. Bongiorno will be coming to tell you how!
Doquile Perrett Meade: Doquile Perrett Meade will make a short presentation discussing Taxation and Debt management. The focus of the taxation advice will be on what is required on an income tax return and legitimate ways of reducing tax liability. Debt management will focus on the options of someone who has accumulated student debts throughout Medical school including personal loans and or a HELP debt. Join the DPM Facebook page to receive all the latest info and offers from DPM!
Barrett Baxter Bye: So now you have some money, what should you be spending it on? BBB will talk about investing and what you need to know about tax. Also covered in this session is what you should know if you are considering buying a house – how much do you need for a deposit, about the first-home buyers grant, stamp duty, negative gearing and all that jazz.
Medic Oncall: We probably all know doctors who have 2 weeks leave, jet set off to Queensland for 2 weeks to locum with all flights and accommodation paid for, get some great money and have a great time. Medic Oncall will let you know how you can get into locum-ing and get a piece of this pie!
Health Super: Health Super will demystify superannuation, illustrating the importance of budgeting, as well as protecting your income. Join the Health Super Student Club today and learn more: www.healthsuperclub.com
The Doctors’ Health Fund: Private Health Insurance is something that most people will probably take up in the next couple of years. The Doctors’ Health Fund is a not-for-profit health insurance company specifically for health professionals. The Doctors’ Health Fund will run through the ins-and-outs of private health insurance, what cover you should be considering and how private health insurance relates to your tax.
